Court of Honor - June 6th WEDNESDAY, at the fire hall.

bulletNormally the scoutmaster asks for volunteers and/or assigns people to bring some thing to drink and or eat.  I do not believe this happened tonight at the meeting.  So please bring drinks and/or snacks to feed you and your guests.  The food and drink will be set on a table to share (if you don't mind).  Ice, cups, napkins are also needed. Thanks, Paul.

Backpacking
June 30th - July 1st
Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
open to all Scouts

Ten mile backpacking hike along part of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.
This is a state maintained 70 mile trail that stretches from Ohiopyle to Johnstown.

We will start from the parking lot near the route 653 trail access and hike about 6 miles the first day to the Grindle Ridge Shelter Area. This first leg of our hike is relatively flat and easy hiking. There are large rock formations and some nice scenery and overlooks along the way. Depending on our pace it should take 2 ½ to 3 ½ hrs. to reach the shelters. The shelters at Grindle Ridge are Adirondacks similar to the ones at Guyasuta. In addition to the fireplace, each shelter has a fire circle, and plenty of split firewood is provided. There are men's and women's latrines which are well maintained and fairly clean. Well water is drawn at a handpump, although it isn't the best tasting, it is tested regularly and is safe to drink. We plan on cooking dinner at the shelters.
The second day takes us to Seven Springs. The trail is steeper but we're only going about 4 miles. The trails highest point of elevation is at the top of North Face slope. The trail actually runs through the ski area to North Face parking lot.

Contact Al Karp (795-9302) if you're interested.
We will get together for a planning meeting about a week before to discuss gear, clothes, food as well as a timetable and driving arrangements.

The Boys Scout Handbook is an excellent source of info on hiking, backpacking and outdoor cooking. I've visited numerous websites devoted to backpacking and have found the BSA Handbook to be as good or better than anything else out there.

Information relevant to backpacking:
Hiking pages 196 - 215
Backpacking pages 228 - 231
Cooking pages 255 - 283
(and of course you can always review your First Aid -- Chapter 11.)

X-TREAM SPORTS PARK

IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME!

Dear Extreme Sports Park Enthusiast,
Your involvement and support for the Penn Hills Extreme Sports Park project has been invaluable thus far; however, the time has arrived when we need your help the most. Following the design, grant process, writing of specifications, bidding, and installation of the park surface, we are nearly ready to install the ramps, half pipes, pyramids, and other obstacles.
Passersby the Duff Road site will observe the new asphalt surface. While we wait for the asphalt to cure, contractors will be installing fencing and preparing the surface for sealer. Once the sealer cures, the surface will be ready for us to install the equipment. Now is the time to organize volunteers. I have promised eager, enthusiastic volunteers for the build.
We were able to purchase more equipment by installing the obstacles ourselves. Skatewave will have licensed manufacturers' representatives assisting and inspecting the build. We plan to install the equipment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday September 29,30 and October 01. If you are available on Wednesday or Thursday September 27 and 28, we could use some help unloading, sorting the parts, and placing them in position, but the majority of the work will take place Friday and Saturday. Sunday will be a light day to finish up. The schedule will be as follows:

We will supply the necessary tools and tamperproof hardware, but if you have mechanics tools like 9/16 open end box wrenches, sockets, ratchets, and cordless tools that you don't mind bringing, the more hands working the better. The grand opening is scheduled to take place Saturday, October 07, 2006, at 11:OOam.

If you have any questions, please contact me, Chris Blackwell, Principal Planner, 412-798-2128 or Dan Miller, Recreation Director, 412-798-2147 at your earliest convenience.

Tool list for everyone:

9/16" open ended wrench

3/8" drive ratchet

(I will provide the special bits needed on the ratchets)

Additional tools:

1 set of air ratchets with compressor

2 Drills -electric is preferred (Generator needed if electric is not available on-site)

Tools for footers

Asphalt Saw for footers

Digging Bar

Post Digger

Trowel

Wheel Barrel

Concrete -10 801bs bags/SOOOpsi

Municipality will need:

Lumberjack Days is almost here!

It is hard to believe that the Tecumsa District Spring Camporee/Webelos Crossover is almost here! Despite the swirling snow this morning, early weather indicators are that we will be blessed with fair and possibly warm weather. Hallelujah!!

As the time is closing in, there are a few last minute details and reminders that I wanted to share with you to help make the weekend even more enjoyable:
bullet
Please have your patrols bring their patrol flag. If they don't have one, make something very simple at your next meeting or even make an axe or saw shaped flag. (How about cutting out a piece of cardboard the shape of a two man saw and nailing it to a pole?). We will be handing out tokens at each station for the boys to hang on their flagpole.
bullet
Please don't forget to bring enough hot dogs, buns, and beans to feed your scouts and adults.
bullet
We will be doing Jamboree style camping, so please do your best to keep the tents orderly and within the true nature of this style of camping.
bullet
Please be sure to bring and display your troop flag proudly at the front of your campsite.
bullet
Although the weather is supposed to be warming up, there is nothing like a nice campfire at night. There will be several fire rings available in the woods and pines behind our campsites, however, there will most likely not be enough for everyone. Please plan on bringing an above ground fire barrel just in case. There are plenty of downed trees in the woods area so bringing tons of firewood should not be necessary (key word is 'in the woods" meaning with all the rain it could possibly be wet--so provisional firewood is always a good idea).
bullet
We are hoping to have an informational meeting on Saturday night after campfire for any boys interested in joining the OA. Please be sure to know which boys are mature enough and age appropriate before sending them to this meeting.
bullet
Don't forget the SM Totem Pole and the Lumberjack Song competition.
bullet
Finally, as we are closing in the event, there are a few items that we still could possible use to help support some of the stations. If you can possibly volunteer to bring some of these items, it would be greatly appreciated:
bullet
A few camp stoves and propane to use for lunchtime cooking
bullet
A few big pots to cook hot dogs and beans
bullet
A few folding tables to set up in the lunch area
bullet
Some non-stick skillets and spatulas to use at Hungry Jack Flapjack Flipping
bullet
A few 25'-35' pieces of big, thick bull-rope
bullet
Stop watches (we need at least 2 or 3 per station in some instances)
bullet
Air horn or siren to announce change of station
bullet
We still need a few adults to step forward and help man some stations as well as help with lunch prep. With an event of this nature, safety must be strongly encourage and one of the ways we can do that is through ample adult support.

If you are able to help with any of the above mentioned items, it would be greatly appreciated.

Till we all hear the first sound of "Timber",

Yours in Scouting,

Gregg Krissinger
Ron McCarrison
